چکیده

We discuss the entropy of a circular polymer under a topological constraint. We call it the topological entropy of the polymer, in short. A ring polymer does not change its topology (knot type) under any thermal fluctuations. Through numerical simulations using some knot invariants, we show that the topological entropy of a stiff ring polymer with a fixed knot is described by a scaling formula as a function of the thickness and length of the circular chain. The result is consistent with the viewpoint that for stiff polymers such as DNAs, the length and diameter of the chains should play a central role in their statistical and dynamical properties. Furthermore, we show that the new formula extends a known theoretical formula for DNA knots. keyword topological entropy, circular polymers, random knotting, self-avoiding polygons, knot invariants, DNA knots

Counting polymer knots to find the entanglement length

Uncrossability of polymer chains in a melt gives rise to a restricted transverse motion of chains, which is represented by a confining ‘‘tube’’. Ultimately, the tube must be of topological origin. We propose two definitions of the tube diameter or entanglement length (Ne) in terms of the properties of topologically equilibrated melts of rings: (1) the probability of a ring in such a melt being ...

Scattering Functions and Correlation Functions of Random Knots

For random knots, we discuss correlation functions and scattering functions, which are fundamental in the statistical mechanics of ring polymers. Random knots gives a theoretical model for a ring polymer with fixed knot in solution at the θ temperature. We introduce a model function for the probability distribution of distance between two nodes in random polygon with fixed knot. We then perform...

Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers: Theoretical Models and Mathematical Challenges

Recently, topological effects of ring polymers have attracted much attention in various fields of science such as physics, biology and chemistry. DNA knots, knots in proteins, and synthetic ring polymers have been extensively studied not only theoretically but also experimentally. Interestingly, their mesoscopic or macroscopic properties may depend on their topology. The topology of a ring poly...

Ring Polymers: Threadings, Knot Electrophoresis and Topological Glasses

Elucidating the physics of a concentrated suspension of ring polymers, or of an ensemble of ring polymers in a complex environment, is an important outstanding question in polymer physics. Many of the characteristic features of these systems arise due to topological interactions between polymers, or between the polymers and the environment, and it is often challenging to describe this quantitat...

An introduction to topological hyperrings

In this paper, we define topological hyperrings and study their basic concepts which supported by illustrative examples. We show some differences between topological rings and topological hyperrings. Also, by the fundamental relation $\Gamma^{*}$, we indicate the role of complete parts (saturated subsets) and complete hyperrings in topological hyperrings and specially we show that if every (clo...
